It might not end up on the mega-blockbuster level of something like Avengers: Age of Ultron or Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but for my money, Tomorrowland is easily one of the most anticipated genre films of 2015. It might be loosely inspired by a Disney attraction, but it's not based on one, nor is it based on a comic book, a toy line or a videogame. It's a major original genre film, and I can't wait to see what director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and writer Damon Lindelof (Lost) do with it.
Trailers for the film so far have only offered small hints of the film's overall plot, but they've dazzled us with imaginative visuals and a sense of wonder that will hopefully pervade the final film when it hits. The first trailers focused a lot on the mysteries of Tomorrowland itself, and the secrets it might hold. The third trailer keeps that air of mystery alive, but also adds a hefty dose of action we haven't seen before. When Casey (Britt Robertson) goes to the home of inventor Frank Walker (George Clooney) looking for answers about Tomorrowland, she's followed by mysterious armed men. Walker puts the house into lockdown and plots an escape, and while we've seen some of that before, we haven't seen it at this level of intensity. Check out what happens when Casey and Frank try to fight the men off:
We know from his work on Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol that Bird can direct action, and that's on display again in this trailer, with an extra sci-fi flair that only adds to my excitment about the film. Everything we've seen from this movie so far is so imaginative and ambitious that, even if the final film doesn't quite work, it'll be worth it just to see how far Bird, Lindelof and company reach.
Tomorrowland hits theaters May 22.
