Prepare for a week of puns, folks, because Godzilla is a gigantic, world-destroying hit at the box office.
With so many comic book movies and sci-fi epics on the schedule, everyone was curious to see if a throwback monster movie franchise like Godzilla could make a dent this summer. Approximately $93.2 million later, we have our answer.
Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla remake, which is estimated to have a budget of $160 million, is on track to be a massive success. Heck, it pulled in a massive $38.5 million on Friday alone, making it the biggest opening day of 2014. For the sake of comparison, Captain America: The Winter Soldier pulled in $36.9 million and Amazing Spider-Man 2 scored in $35.2 on their respective first days.
It’s interesting to see that a franchise like Godzilla still has staying power, but the real test will come next week. Fellow blockbuster-to-be X-Men: Days of Future Past opens next week, so it’ll be interesting to see if Godzilla tanks as fast as Amazing Spider-Man 2 cratered after its opening week buzz.
With an opening like that, we probably won’t have to wait too long for even more city-stomping insanity.
