Sixty-four years later the giant, irradiated lizard from Japan is still going strong, not only the "King of Monsters," but also the king of his own multimedia franchise that comprises TV, film, video games, plush toys, action figures, T-shirts, and more merchandise that would make Yogurt from Spaceballs proud.
While we're all excited to see Godzilla fight Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah next year in Michael Dougherty's King of the Monsters, Toho's animation division has an early trick up its giant monster sleeve, Godzilla: The Planet Eater.
Watch the trailer below:
According to IMDb, the movie is set in a future where humanity has become friendly with alien civilizations, and Earth and her allies find themselves under attack from a glowing, dragon-like beast that seeks to end all life as we know it. The beast's name? Ghidorah. Not King Ghidorah, mind you. This one's only got a single head, not three, and sort of resembles Shenron from Dragon Ball Z.
As you've probably guessed, the only thing standing between Earth and utter destruction is Godzilla. You may have also noticed that the 3D animation style is reminiscent of the kind used for Netflix's Dragon Prince and Disney XD's Star Wars Resistance.
No release date has been set for the United States, but Godzilla: The Planet Eater premieres at the Tokyo International Film Festival on Nov. 3, before hitting Japanese theaters on Nov. 9. The movie was directed by Godzilla alumni Hiroyuki Seshita and Kôbun Shizuno, both of whom co-directed Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.
