Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah stomp into theaters this May in a bid to duke it out and choose the "King of the Monsters" in Michael Dougherty's kaiju-filled summer blockbuster, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Before that time arrives, however, the movie is getting a companion graphic novel from Legendary Comics, Godzilla: Aftershock.
Written by Arvid Nelson (Batman: Joker's Asylum) and drawn by Drew Edward Johnson (Star Wars X-Wing: Rogue Squadron), Aftershock will be set after the events of 2014's Godzilla film from director Gareth Edwards. After his victory against the MUTO in San Francisco, everyone's favorite atomic lizard must fight against a new massive (not to mention ancient) enemy that rises from beneath the crust of the planet, causing terrible earthquakes.
"Godzilla: Aftershock is yet another exhilarating entry into the canon of the MonsterVerse, and it is especially exciting to introduce fans to a brand-new original monster unique to the comic, but true to the legacy of Godzilla,” said Robert Napton, senior vice president of Legendary Comics.
Here's the tie-in poster that lucky fans attending Los Angeles Comic Con can pick up at the Legendary Comics panel — “Godzilla: Secrets of the MonsterVerse” — on Saturday, Oct. 27. The artwork on the poster was drawn specifically for the graphic novel.
In addition to its impressive lineup of classic Toho beasties, King of Monsters also features an ensemble cast of Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, and Kyle Chandler, among others.
In fact, the comic will feature some of their characters, like Farmiga's Dr. Emma Russell, an operative of the kaiju-focused government agency known as Monarch. Emma's determined to uncover secrets, on a trail of secrets that reveal a planet-wide cataclysm. All the while, some very shady folks are on her heels.
