When Robert Downey Jr. signed a rather lucrative two-picture deal with Marvel in order to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3, people thought that would be the end of it, and that the part would eventually have to be recast.
Still, we gotta admit that we all live in hope that the actor will sign on the dotted line and return for an encore in Iron Man 4.
This has been the source of countless sleepless nights for most fans since, for many, Downey is linked so intrinsically with the role of everyone’s favorite genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, Tony Stark, that it’s difficult (OK, make that IMPOSSIBLE) to even imagine anyone else in the role! Same thing goes for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Yeah, we heard rumblings that Colin Farrell could potentially step in as Tony Stark, but is the dude truly worthy of Mjolnir the suit of armor?
The fact that Iron Man 3 made an absurd bunch of moolah (make that $1.2 billion), and the insistence of Marvel Studios’ head man, producer Kevin Feige, confirmed that an Iron Man 4 will happen. But will Downey return to the role?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly while on the set of Age of Ultron, Downey was asked about returning for another Iron Man sequel, and he apparently sounded quite optimistic, saying:
“It’s down to Kevin Feige and Ike Perlmutter and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and that’s on us to agree or disagree. When things are going great, there’s a lot of agreement.”
Kevin Feige himself confirmed to Collider that something was indeed in the works concerning Iron Man 4 and even Thor 3:
“Of course anything’s a possibility. Who the heck knows? We have a lot of work to go to finish Avengers 2. We have a lot of work for whatever Avengers 3 is, that’s all folks need to know. Who knows what happens after that.”
When pressed further for a bit more information, Downey appeared to be a tad attached and possessive about the role, stating that:
“It’s that thing of: why give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed? Most people are saying that right when they get knocked out.”
So, are you guys hopeful that Robert Downey Jr. will step back into Tony Stark's shoes and suit up for Iron Man 4?
