What was R.L. Stine's Goosebumps franchise lacking until now? That's right, evil gummy bears! The classic candy turns malevolent in the first trailer for Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, the direct sequel to 2015's Goosebumps, in which Jack Black played a comical version of the famed horror author, dealing with the fact that all of his books have come to life in a quiet Delaware town.
Slappy the evil dummy, the praying mantis from Shock Street, the Abominable Snowman from Pasadena: They were all present, but the nightmare didn't end after all of Stine's monsters were imprisoned once more at the end of the last movie. In the follow-up, two kids enter the writer's now-abandoned house to find a tome titled Haunted Halloween, and when it's opened, the entire charade will begin again.
Except this time, the previous roster of creatures will be joined by a few new faces, such as the scarecrow from The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight (1994) and the swamp beast from How to Kill a Monster (1996). Watch the trailer below and see how many Goosebumps characters you recognize from the books.
Most noticeably missing from the trailer is Black's Stine character, unless you count the fact that Black also voices Slappy. One possible explanation for Stine's absence and the derelict state of his house is that he's gone into some sort of self-imposed exile after the events of the last film and that he'll show up to help our new set of heroes just when they need him most.
It also doesn't look as if Odeya Rush, Dylan Minnette, and Ryan Lee will reprise their roles as Hannah Fairchild, Zach Cooper, and Champ, respectively. The main players here are Jeremy Ray Taylor (It) as Sonny Quinn, Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) as Sarah Quinn, and Caleel Harris (Castle Rock) as Sam Carter.
Directed by Ari Sandel (The DUFF), Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween will begin to scare audiences in theaters Oct. 12.
