The virtual band Gorillaz, founded by Blur’s Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett, is getting its own TV series.

In an interview with Q Magazine, Hewlett confirmed a 10-episode animated series based on the band is currently in the works. The band is dropping its new record Humanz at the end of the month, along with some fresh merchandise and a clothing line. The animated band is comprised of four “members”: 2D on lead vocals; Murdoc Niccals on bass guitar; Noodle on guitar; and Russel Hobbs on drums and percussion.

No word on exactly what form the animated series might make, but it should be interesting. The Gorillaz project has always experimented with the blurred line between animation and reality, holding live concerts (behind a projection screen, with visuals on the screen) and coming up with fascinating stories for the fictional members of the band. It’d stand to reason an animated series would blend music and interesting visuals into something truly original.

There’s obviously no release date yet, but later this year seems likely, considering Humans hits shelves in just a few weeks.
