The midseason finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended on one heck of a cliffhanger, and now we have our first look at a shocking return. Death be damned, Grant Ward is back.

The most recent arc of the flagship Marvel series introduced the concept of a Matrix-like Framework into the MCU, and ended with Simmons and Daisy jacking into the system to try and rescue the rest of the team. This virtual world may look familiar, but it's anything but normal. Hydra is apparently the S.H.I.E.L.D. equivalent in this reality, while Simmons is dead and Fitz is a rich dude. Daisy is working for Hydra (apparently) and living with her boyfriend … Grant Ward.

You know, the former character played by Brett Dalton, who started as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, turned out to be an undercover Hydra agent, was killed by Coulson on an alien planet, then was taken over by the evil alien entity Hive and was eventually killed again? Yeah, that guy. The producers are all big fans of Dalton, so it's no surprise they'd use the soft reset of a virtual world to get him back in the fold. Plus, having him back on the board should make the Framework all the more interesting.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, April 4, on ABC.
