Sure, the 8-bit renditions of popular sci-fi franchises is getting a bit played out these days — but it doesn’t make the Guardians of the Galaxy cut any less awesome.

The folks at CineFix have dropped the latest installment in their popular 8-Bit Cinema series of shorts and, this time they’ve targeted Marvel’s surprise hit of 2014 for a throwback 1980s reimagining. If there was ever a film weird and nostalgia-infused enough to have this work perfectly, this is it.

The 3+ minute short is an absolute blast, and essentially recaps the basic plot of the film and major action set pieces via side-scrolling action and word bubbles. Oh, and you can’t beat the classic MIDI-style soundtrack that ties it all together.

Somewhere out there, an indie game developer needs to crank this out so I can play it in real life on my iPhone. I want to be Star-Lord. Like, today, please. In the meantime, enjoy the short and let us know what you think:
