Pretty much everyone has died and come back at least once in the MCU, but one Guardians of the Galaxy star reveals she almost didn’t make it through for the sequel.

Karen Gillan revealed to ScreenCrush that in the original draft of Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula didn’t survive to kick around and join the team  as a semi-good guy for the sequel. But, this being a Marvel movie, they eventually rewrote the script in a way that allowed Nebula to potentially return for Vol. 2. Which, obviously, she did. Because, come on, everyone gets a four-picture deal these days, right?

Here’s an excerpt from her comments:

“There was a point where Nebula actually died in the first movie. I thought, ‘Okay, so that’s going to be it for her,’ at one point. Then suddenly they rewrote her ending — and then they rewrote it again, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay. What’s going on?’ I was really shocked when I got to come back and as part of the team in the next movie. That was amazing! I definitely didn’t expect that.”

It’s not a surprise to hear that director James Gunn decided to keep Nebula around. The entire theme of the Guardians is built around redemption, and Karen Gillian is a buzzy young actress who lit it up in the first film. So yeah, of course they’d want to keep her around. Plus, at least according to early reviews, it sounds like she gets a great story in Vol. 2.

What do you think? Would it have upped the stakes to have Nebula die, or are you glad she survived?
