James Gunn has been teasing a bigger cast in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and now it sounds like he’s eyeing a major female comic character to round out the roster.
Word broke earlier this week that French actress Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee’s Oldboy) had landed a mystery role, and now Deadline is reporting she’ll actually be playing the comic character Mantis. As anyone who has read Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s 2008 era comic run that inspired the film can attest, she is a vital supporting player for Star-Lord’s misfit team of galactic heroes.
Mantis was originally introduced in Avengers #112 in 1973. She was created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck. She is typically portrayed with psychic abilities (which have bailed out the Guardians more than a few times in the comics) and connections to the Kree. She has been everything from a part-time team member to in-house counselor in the comic run over the past few years.
The character brings a ton of potential to Gunn’s sequel, and there are so many interesting things to be done with her psychic powers. Plus, the character is a great, strong female character — and you can’t have too many of those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
What do you think of Klementieff? A good casting choice?
