Since the post-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that gave audiences a glimpse of the cocoon in the embryonic Adam Warlock was undergoing metamorphosis, everyone has wanted to know he will finally emerge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No one can really say for sure without the power of the Infinity Gauntlet — but at least you can now see the amazing concept art of that cocoon.
Artist Ian Joyner has just shared his ridiculously detailed concept for the contraption. Just looking at this thing makes you think something monstrous made of mostly teeth and claws is going to crawl out of it at any second (though you can argue that the Magus is his own breed of monster). It levels up the original design from the comics into an artificial chrysalis that falls somewhere between robotic and insectile, from the Alien-esque metal ribs to the multiple knobs down its sides to the preternaturally glowing energy source that can only be an Infinity Gem.
"I did a lot of passes on the cocoon for the end tag of Guardians,” Joyner said. "The final look shown here had a lot of golden hues and tech that tied into the Sovereigns’ world and really looked awesome on screen."
Whether the elegantly terrifying art of H.R. Giger (think Alien) was one of Joyner's inspirations behind this thing remains a mystery. The aesthetic does seem to share genetic material with a Xenomorph.
Though the cocoon has not yet opened, what has been revealed is that the origins of Warlock's character have evolved in the MCU. The Enclave is nowhere to be found. His creation is also as far from scientific as you can get when a supreme being who didn't get her way vows revenge. Ayesha is still bitter from her defeat by the Star-Lord and his posse of unlikely superheroes
In that bonus scene, and her revenge takes the form of an eerily glowing cocoon that is growing the perfect entity. She even calls him Adam. Then the spoilers go dark and the speculation begins about when exactly Warlock will appear.
Adam will probably be incubating a while longer. Guardians director James Gunn revealed he will not yet rise when the Guardians and Avengers go up against Thanos in Infinity War, so it could possibly happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or Avengers 4.
Obsess over that end scene when Guardians of the Galaxy zooms onto Digital HD on August 8 and DVD/Blu-Ray on August 22.
