Back in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy was the little space movie that could, the misfit Marvel flick that wasn't supposed to work but went on to score huge critical acclaim and more than $700 million at the box office. That success, plus the massive fan response that's continued over the last two and a half years, means that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 brings with it some very high expectations. Well, the bar just got raised again ...
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a test screening for Vol. 2 just scored a perfect 100 from its audience, a rare feat for any film and the first for Marvel Studios. That makes the earliest reactions to the film better than they were for both The Avengers and Iron Man 3, both of which scored in the high 90s.
As THR notes, Marvel chooses screening participants in a more select way than other studios, conducting "friends and families" screenings through a very thorough process that helps cut down on potential leaks. That means it's hard to compare the film to other test screenings by other studios, but it's also important to note that test screenings don't necessarily predict box-office response. Movies that test high can ultimately tank, and movies that test low can turn into runaway hits.
What's more interesting here is how this news contributes to the film's already huge buzz machine. Fans hoping for a dazzling follow-up will be over the moon ... but they'll also be expecting absolute greatness.
So, how will fans respond when they finally see the film? We've got less than three months until we find out, but one thing is clear: There's no way this film doesn't absolutely crush its opening weekend.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives May 5.
