Guy hopes his comic book collection will set a Guinness world record

Bob Bretall has a lot of comics. A LOT.

When Australia resident Brett Chilman set the world record for the largest private collection of comics with the Australian "World Record Academy" with 68,000 books, Bretall thought to himself, "Gee, I have at least 20,000 more comics than that guy." And that began a journey to create a new record, this time with Guinness.

But what does it take to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records? Well, it sure ain't easy.

For one thing, the assessment of the collection must take place in a public place or in a venue open to public inspection. So, at the very least, Bob would have to make his home ready for some serious company. Witnesses would have to sign and authenticate the collection, including one signed statement of authentication from a relevant, established and recognized society specializing in collections of this type.

So Bob had his work cut out for him. Lots of sorting through duplicates and magazines that would qualify. He'd also need a specialist in comics, not to mention enough pizza to satisfy those in attendence at this momentous occasion.

89,613. That's how many comics we're talking about. And what makes Bretall's collection most notable, albeit not in the Guinness sense, is that he wasn't simply stockpiling books -- he was reading.

What is prudent to the Guinness folks is noted comic sales and marketing expert Michael Hamersky having come in to physically analyze and confirm the collection. So that was his specialist. And, yes, Bob also left it open to the public to come and check out what he had.

As of now, Guinness has not weighed in on Bob's collection. The paperwork is there. Now it's just a matter of waiting.

But while we wait, why not check out this gallery of Bob's collection, drool with envy, and wonder what treasures might be found within.
