It hasn't even been a week since the movie's general release yet, but Halloween producer Jason Blum (founder of Blumhouse) already wants a sequel to the film, which acts as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 horror original.

“It’s hard to make a great movie, period, and I always say, make a great movie first and we’ll figure out a franchise after,” Blum said during a chat with TheWrap. “Of course we would want to make a sequel, in fact, we’re dying to make a sequel, but we’re guests in Malek Akkad’s house, so there are a lot of people that have to be in the same mindset as us. Nothing’s been set in stone, but we’re certainly going to try.”
Akkad's been with the franchise for over two decades, serving as producer on every movie since Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers in the mid-'90s. During a recent interview, Akkad voiced his whole-hearted support for a Halloween TV show, which he said would not be quite like the movies.
Directed and co-written by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express), the new Halloween does a nice job of leaving the door open for a sequel. For one thing, it introduces new and younger heroines who can take over the franchise if need be, Laurie Strode's daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak). Secondly, if you stayed until the very end of the credits, then you remember hearing Michael Myers' heavy breathing, hinting that he may not have died in Laurie's purposeful house fire after all.
From a money perspective, the film sliced its way to nearly $80 million domestically in the opening weekend alone. By the end of its upcoming second weekend, it'll probably surpass the $100 million mark. Since the thing only cost between $10 - $15 million to make, Universal Pictures should be very happy indeed, and eager to greenlight a follow-up that can make even more box-office dough.
Halloween is now playing in theaters everywhere.
