Are we any closer to seeing an on-screen meeting between Star-Lord and the biggest star in the Star Wars galaxy? After the latest Instagram post from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, we’re still not sure — but it looks as though he and Mark Hamill have finally followed through on getting together over coffee to talk about…something.
Earlier this year, the pair started up a fun Twitter chat about finding a place for the iconic Star Wars actor somewhere in the third and final chapter of the current Guardians movie cycle. It sounded at the time like a lighthearted idea — the sort of thing you don’t take too seriously — but it got fans of both movie universes talking.
Well, Gunn’s latest social post is sure to fire up the crossover excitement all over again, after he and the whole Hamill family finally did meet up over Memorial Day weekend at Hamill’s Malibu, California, house.
The Hamill family had Gunn, who lives nearby, over not only “for that cup of coffee we talked about on twitter months ago,” said Gunn, but “some bbq. And cornbread. And cobbler. And OKAY IT’S TRUE I ATE THE HAMILL’S OUT OF HOUSE AND HOME BACK OFF.”
While Gunn didn’t directly address a possible role for Hamill in Guardians 3, he definitely invited fans to turn their imaginations loose a little by referencing their original “cup of coffee” idea in the first place. Their earlier Twitter dialogue kicked off when Gunn responded to a Twitter follower’s request that Hamill be given a Guardians 3 role, so none of this would even have happened (presumably) if somebody hadn’t mentioned the idea in the first place.
Hamill didn’t drop any obvious hints about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his own comment on Gunn’s new photo, but confirmed that they hung out, pigged out, and talked about… well, “EVERYTHING.”
“Such a great day meeting my neighbor @JamesGunn!" Hamill captioned the same photo. "We have so much in common & talked about EVERYTHING: the weather, gardening tips, favorite recipes, growing up Catholic, our mutual love of dogs, bleu cheese, risqué limericks & the weather again. #FunWithGunn.”
For now, we still can’t say whether Hamill will make the crossing from the galaxy far, far away for an MCU spin with the Guardians of the Galaxy. But at least these guys aren’t shy about keeping the idea on the table, in plain view of all the fans who’d love to see it happen.
