If a great deal of what you’re looking forward to in Solo: A Star Wars Story is the nostalgia factor, then these two new clips are going to get you even more pumped to see the old become new again.
On the heels of last night’s Jimmy Kimmel, where a stormtrooper-escorted Woody Harrelson (for his own protection and Disney’s spoiler proofing) debuted a new clip, today, we’ve got two more fresh clips, both of which show off famous strategy games from the galaxy far, far away.
Titled “Han Meets Lando,” the first clip takes place over a game of Sabacc. And it also happens to be the first meeting of two of the brightest shinning stars within said galaxy: Han Solo, emphasis on the “a,” now played by Alden Ehrenich (wow, that does take some getting used to) and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover, who has already seemingly successfully embodied his iconic character)…
SPOILER ALERT! If you don’t know your Star Wars lore and want to go into Solo fresh… wait a sec, you don’t know your Star Wars lore?!
Of course, Sabacc is the historic card game that Lando legendarily gambled the Millennium Falcon over, and lost, Han-dily. We can only imagine the heartache he felt over losing his beloved Cape Room.
But hey, at least he still kept his arms. Which may be more than we can expect from Woody’s character, space gangster Tobias Beckett, in this scene, which shows Beckett schooling Chewy at Holochess, back when the Wookie was but a novice at the Falcon’s premiere board game:
Holochess, of course, dates back to the first Star Wars film, back in 1977, when R2-D2 plays a game with Chewy, and soon realizes it’s not wise to upside a Wookie. It also gets a call back in The Force Awakens, when Finn accidentally kickstarts a game (perhaps in stride!).
All of this bodes well for fans of the old franchise who are hoping Ron Howard and company handle our most favorite characters with care. We’ll soon see, as Solo: A Star Wars Story opens wide May 25. Wanna bet pink slips they will?
