Harley Quinn has come a long way since her debut in Batman: The Animated Series, so we asked the man who helped dream her up what he thinks of her evolution the past few decades.

Blastr caught up with animation legend Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond) at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the character, and how she’s changed between her first appearance in animated form, to her numerous comic book arcs, and now her live action portrayal in the upcoming DC flick Suicide Squad.
Though he hasn’t had a direct hand in all of Harley’s dealing the past few years, Dini said he’s enjoyed following along to see her go from a wacky sidekick to a character more in control of her own actions and motivations. Not bad for a quirky character initially pitched as the Joker’s sidekick on an early 1990’s cartoon, right?

Harley is set to make her live action debut in Suicide Squad next month.
