Jam City's Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery game allows you to assume the role of a never-before-seen Hogwarts student, but that doesn't mean you won't meet a few familiar faces along the way. As evidenced by the early trailers and promo materials, you'll get to learn under all the teachers from the Harry Potter books, like Dumbledore, Snape, Flitwick, Sprout, and McGonagall. However, two new images released today introduce us to two more familiar faces from J.K. Rowling's wizarding world: a young Nymphadora Tonks and a puppy Fang.
Making her debut in Order of the Phoenix, Tonks (first name: Nymphadora) is an Auror — a dark wizard catcher — for the Ministry of Magic who studied under Mad-Eye Moody. Known for her incredible clumsiness, Tonks is a Metamorphmagus, a witch or wizard who can alter their facial features at will; she often changes the color of her hair. Tonks, a cousin of Sirius Black, ends up marrying Remus Lupin, and the two have one child together, Teddy. Both parents are killed during the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows, leaving Teddy to be raised by his godfather, Harry Potter.
Before all that, Tonks was just a simple member of Hufflepuff, although her head of house didn't think she was Prefect material as she "lacked certain necessary qualities" such as the ability to behave herself. In the live-action films, she's played by Natalia Tena.
A puppy version of Fang is an interesting choice for the game. He's the boardhound owned by the Hogwarts gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid. Hagrid's got a major love for dangerous creatures, but Fang isn't one of them and he's not even magical. While a major coward, he's accompanied both Hagrid and Harry into the Forbidden Forest, which contains a menagerie of dangerous magical creatures. With a penchant for drooling all over people, Fang was nearly eaten by a horde of Acromantulas along with Harry and Ron in Chamber of Secrets.
The fact that Tonks and Fang are young is proof that the game takes place before Sorcerer's Stone begins. Tonks attended the school between 1984 and 1991, meaning that her final and seventh year was at the same time as Harry's first year. Since Fang is still young, it's most likely set before Book 1.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery should be fully available on Google Play and the App Store very soon, as the mobile game's release was slated for spring.
