Marvel Studios must have high hopes for Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanks to the relatively low profile of the source material and what is reportedly a different tone, the film could easily be hit or miss. But as we all know, Marvel's no stranger to taking risks. Everything from Iron Man to The Avengers took a huge leap of faith. Therefore, we're not surprised Guardians is getting the same treatment.
According to JoBlo, Marvel has set aside an upcoming release date for May 6, 2016. Their source believes it belongs to the yet-to-be-confirmed sequel for Guardians of the Galaxy. The studio's calendar also includes blank slots for July 8, 2016, and May 5, 2017. Unfortunately, no titles are currently attached to those.
Perhaps Doctor Strange or Black Panther will finally get his day in the sun? Or they could easily belong to the already-established Captain America and Thor franchises. Either way, Marvel's Phase 3 will kick off with Ant-Man on July 17, 2015, possibly followed by Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in 2016. Important sidenote: Warner Bros.' Batman vs. Superman also opens on May 6, 2016. So this could be a legitimate superhero box-office battle.
Until then, let's enjoy what's right in front of us. Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters April 4 of this year, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy on Aug. 1. Then there's the grandaddy of them all, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, on May 1, 2015, which will once again reunite Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
