Has that rumored Boba Fett spinoff landed a legendary Star Wars writer?

Rumors of a Boba Fett spinoff movie continue to swirl, and the name of one of Star Wars' most famous writers swirls with them.

Ever since Disney announced that Star Wars standalone films would accompany the projected new trilogy that begins with Episode VII next year, many pundits and fans have expected legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett to get his own adventure. So far, Disney has done nothing official except to name two directors to helm spinoff films -- Godzilla's Gareth Edwards and Chronicle's Josh Trank -- but that doesn't mean speculation about a Boba Fett film has died down at all.

Whispers of a Fett film coming our way were stoked earlier this year when director John Schnepp claimed he had a source that said a Boba Fett film is definitely happening, and that Empire Strikes Back (and now Star Wars: Episode VII) screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan would be scripting it. Since then Disney has hired directors, reaffirming its commitment to spinoff films, but we've still heard nothing official about characters or writers. Now a new report seems to be lending credence to Schnepp's claim.

Schmoes Know reported this week that Kasdan is indeed writing a Boba Fett standalone film for Disney, and that his script may draw on stories from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. So the rumors of a Kasdan-scripted Fett film live again, but that's not all. Schmoes also noted that, based on a purported spinoff release schedule that circulated around the Web last month, the Fett film is rumored to be released in 2016, which would seem to make it the film Gareth Edwards is working on. The trouble with that, though, is that Edwards' Star Wars project has already been connected to writer Gary Whitta, not Kasdan. So what are we to make of this? Well, that rumored release schedule could simply be wrong, and Edwards could be working on a different Star Wars film while the Fett flick is set to be released at a later date. It's also possible that Kasdan and Whitta have worked on the same script. Either way, rumors refuse to go away that Kasdan -- who's easily one of the saga's most acclaimed writers, if not the most beloved Star Wars scribe of them all -- is hard at work on more than just Episode VII.

Edwards' Star Wars film is reportedly set for a December 2016 release, so whether it's a Boba Fett movie or not, we'll likely know before long. In the meantime, let's just ponder the idea that Kasdan has a bigger hand in the next phase of the saga than we thought, and hope that actually spells the good news we'd like it to.
