HBO has unleashed a first teaser trailer for its eagerly anticipated sci-fi thriller series Westworld.

Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, this contemporary adaptation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 cult movie is being described as "a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin." So far, so intriguing.

The original premise of the movie was set in a futuristic park (a la Jurassic Park) in which paying visitors got to play-act in one of three areas re-creating various time periods: West World, Medieval World and Roman World, with the park using high-tech robots instead of flesh-and-blood actors. When a technical glitch happens, all hell breaks loose and things take a turn for the deadly. While the movie starred acting legend Yul Brynner in the iconic role of the silently deadly Gunslinger, the role is reprised here by Ed Harris.

I'm not sure how the new series will follow the movie, but from the looks of the teaser trailer, I think we'll be in for a treat. Check it out:

The series boasts an impressive cast that includes Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins Jr., Simon Quarterman and Angela Sarafyan.

Westworld is set to premiere on HBO in 2016. Will you be watching?
