HBO has recast the role of Daenerys Targaryen for the upcoming series A Game of Thrones, based on the awesome George R.R. Martin book of the same name. Maureen Ryan is reporting that Emilia Clark will play Daenerys after Tamzin Merchant left the project last month, and that Clark "appears to be a newcomer to U.S. television."

That means some scenes in the pilot will have to be reshot, which is always a bit ominous for any TV show but hopefully won't derail the project. In March another key role in the series also had to be recast when Jennifer Ehle was replaced by Michelle Fairley as Catelyn Stark.

On the plus side, the cast that has stuck around is pretty amazing: Lena Headey, Sean Bean, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Fairley, Peter Dinklage, Jason Momoa and Mark Addy.
