Not content to ride the buzz from Ash vs. Evil Dead, Starz also came to San Diego Comic-Con armed with the first footage from the ambitious Neil Gaiman adaptation American Gods. Want to see?

The trailer introduces us to several of the series’ main players, and Ian McShane’s Mr. Wednesday positively steals the show. Ricky Whittle’s Shadow Moon looks to be the viewer’s proxy into this mysterious world of new and old gods, and series creator Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) looks to be digging deep to bring Neil Gaiman’s Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novel to life.

Once it gets rolling, the series is expected to follow Shadow Moon as he becomes Mr. Wednesdays bodyguard, as Ian McShane’s alter ego works to mass an army to take on the new gods. As expected, the visuals are positively stunning, and this certainly seems like it could be both a critical and breakout hit when it arrives next year. Fuller should get more than a few chances to shine with this material (and some of these scenes and scenarios should definitely be familiar to readers).

American Gods premieres in 2017 on Starz.
