The rumors have been flying for years now that a new Terminator film is in the works, then back in development hell. Now the future killing machine is giving us an update himself.
Basically, Arnold Schwarzenegger says Terminator 5 is still on the table, and apparently in active development, with a script currently being written. Though the franchise is a bit mired in rights disputes, the last we’d heard is that Annapurna Pictures and Skydance Productions wanted Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) to put together a screenplay.
Apparently they’re doing just that. So, fingers crossed.
Here's what Ahnold had to say about the project, along with a few others:
"We’re writing it now. There are three projects being written that involve me. One is Terminator 5, the other is a Conan movie that Universal is doing and there’s the sequel to Twins, which is called Triplets. We’ll all look quite different in that. The third triplet is Eddie Murphy, so figure that one out."
Considering that Schwarzenegger has been the heart and soul of the franchise, and how much the last film suffered from his absence, getting him back is at least a step in the right direction. But he was also involved in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and it was average at best.
So, again: Cross your fingers and hope John Connor can not only save the future — but save this franchise.
