Almost as heartbreaking as the ASPCA commercials with abused and ignored puppies, actor Henry Cavill’s tribute video to his newly shaven ‘stache is one for the record books.

Replete with a montage set to Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” (it really is close to those ASPCA videos), the Man of Steel himself posted a video on Instagram memorializing the “shaved but not forgotten” facial hair that made his CGI-disguised upper lip so uncanny during Justice League.

Cavill grew the soup-strainer for his role in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and, when Justice League required him back on set for reshoots, he was under a no-shave contract. So the effects team had to blur out Superman’s ‘stache and everyone made fun of it. Even Cavill.

Don’t think we didn’t see you sneak the creepily edited face of Superman in there, Cavill. We saw.

The actor ponders his loss in the mirror, rubbing in the silliness that was the squabble between two movie studios. While StacheGate finally comes to a close, fans can only hope the facial hair gets its own slide during the Oscars' "In Memoriam" segment next year.
