You’ve heard plenty about what others are bringing to the various tables, panels, and booths of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. But what about SYFY?
Alexandra Shapiro, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Digital for SYFY and USA Network, says “At SYFY, we know that genre fans are not mere observers, they’re passionate participants. And so everything we do at SDCC will include remarkable creative work from fan artists and creators, from the designs on our sought-after swag bags to the décor and food at our parties.”
Shapiro's referring to the Fan Creators initiative, the multi-platform program that will “celebrate, nurture and support the makers, artists and creators at the heart of genre fandom.” Kicking off at SDCC 2018 -- with fan art and designs decorating SYFY’s swag bags, branded buses, and trains -- this program will offer various ways (throughout the year and via a to-be-launched hub) creative fans can bring their love of everything genre to the rest of us.
Over the course of the four days of Comic-Con, SYFY is bringing 10 panels, two fan parties, limited-edition merch (for which you can compete at bingo, karaoke, or the Human Claw Machine), and the launch of SYFY WIRE's Fan Creators initiative, which will be highlighted with the fan creator awards (featuring some special appearances by Orlando Jones). SYFY WIRE’s round-the-clock coverage (including news, video segments, and celebrity interviews) will be right there for it all.
Plus: Mystery boxes! SYFY will partner with high-profile collaborators to create limited-edition merchandise, each featuring an original, custom genre-themed design by a famed artist. Limited quantities will be released each Thursday through Saturday at 10 a.m. at the San Diego Children's Museum.
As far as SYFY’s panel presence goes, the network is bringing out eight show panels and two SYFY WIRE meta-panels. Tackling the latter first, the Aisha Tyler-hosted The Great Debate will return to SDCC and feature plenty of opinionated celebrity guests.
SYFY WIRE Fangrrls managing editor Cher Martinetti will host SYFY WIRE Fangrrls: Women Changing the Game, a talk with some of the coolest women changing the game in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.
As for SYFY's TV shows, George R.R. Martin’s sci-fi horror series Nightflyers and The Russo Brothers’ graphic novel-based Deadly Class are the two shows making their SDCC debut -- giving fans a sneak peek at the exciting adaptations -- while returning favorites Krypton, The Magicians, Wynonna Earp, Van Helsing, and Z Nation will also offer fans a glimpse inside with panel discussions from stars and creators. Plus there will be a panel for The Last Sharknado: It's About Time. Which, FYI, is the last Sharknado movie so obviously this will be epic.
If that seems like a lot to handle, don’t worry. We at SYFY WIRE will be with you the whole time, catching you up on anything you may miss when SDCC 2018 starts July 19.
