We finally have some news concerning Lionsgate’s planned Power Rangers reboot. Apparently, casting is currently underway, and they’ve begun testing young up-and-coming actors to make up the brand-new team.
Variety reports that Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (Chasing Life) and rapper/singer Brian “Sene” Marc are among those testing for the role of Black Ranger "Zack."
As for Red Ranger "Jason," K.J. Apa (Shortland Street), Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles) and Mitchell Hope (The Descendants) are said to be testing for the role.
Naomi Scott (Terra Nova, The Martian) and newcomer Stephanie Scott are up for the role of "Kimberley," aka the Pink Ranger. Jeff Sneider of The Wrap added to Variety’s report and said that AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia, The Carrie Diaries) is also up to play Kim.
Insiders have told Variety that the studio is looking for fresh faces in order to fill out the team (Blue Ranger "Billy," and Yellow Ranger "Trini") but that they’ll probably zero in on a big name to play the Big Bad villain, though it’s said no offers have been made for that part yet.
Lionsgate’s reboot reimagines the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high-school kids who find themselves imbued with alien powers. They then unite to save the world with the aid of giant mechanical vehicles known as Zords.
The upcoming Power Rangers movie will be helmed by Dean Isrealite from a script written by Thor scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. It's tentatively set to be released in January 2017.
What do you guys think of those particular choices? Do you agree with some of them, or would you rather see other actors being considered for these roles? What are your own picks?
