Disney is keen to capitalize on its Lucasfilm investment, and now we know who could star as a young Han Solo in one of those Star Wars spinoff films.
Variety reports Disney has met with (literally) thousands of actors, and now that list has been cut down to approximately a dozen options to headline the Untitled Young Han Solo spinoff. From that shortlist, they’ve apparently identified eight actors near the top of it. The options include: Miles Teller (Fantastic Four), Ansel Elgort (Divergent), Dave Franco (Now You See Me), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Logan Lerman (Fury), Emory Cohen (Brooklyn) and Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some).
Most of the names on that list aren’t a huge surprise (since they’re pretty much all buzzy, good-looking young actors), and it seems Disney is looking to stay around 20-25 years old for the role. There’s also a fair bit of genre and action experience in the mix, so you’d think a Star Wars film wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for some of these guys.
Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street) and producer Kathleen Kennedy are expected to make a final decision within the next month. Which begs the question — what’s the rush? This movie doesn’t actually start shooting for another year, so why do they need the role filled now? Yep, you guessed it: the power of the shared universe.
Per the report, young Han Solo apparently has a cameo role in the upcoming prequel film Rogue One, which is set between Episodes III-IV (making a young Han age-appropriate). That story tracks a team of Rebels as they attempt to steal the Death Star plans, and it stands to reason they could cross paths with a burgeoning smuggler along the way.
