Casting reports have been circulating for months about the proposed Star Wars spinoff featuring a young Han Solo, and now a name has finally risen to the top of the list: Alden Ehrenreich.
Deadline reports relative newcomer Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) is now the frontrunner to play young Han Solo in the spinoff Star Wars prequel. He’s reportedly beating out better-known actors Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) for the gig, largely due to an “impressive performance” during auditions.
Plus, though a lot of mid-tier names have been floated, the Star Wars movies have almost always preferred to go with lesser-known actors (which held true more recently with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, etc.). Considering that young Han Solo already carries a ton of baggage as it is, a fresh face would probably have the best chance to pull it off. Whoever they choose, it’s not going to be easy stepping into Harrison Ford’s boots.
Little is known about the young Han Solo movie, though it will reportedly follow Solo in the years before the original Star Wars trilogy. It will fit into the anthology release schedule (i.e. Rogue One), outside the main films (i.e. Episode VIII). The project is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie), with a release date penciled in for May 25, 2018.
What do you think of Ehrenreich? Is he a good choice?
