Here's how Disney + Lucas plan to define (and redefine) Star Wars canon

Along with the six main films and long-running Clone Wars series, there is an absolute ton of Star Wars canon spread out everywhere from comic books to tie-in novels. So now Disney is working to determine what will actually remain legit.

Lucasfilm employee Leland Chee, a part of the company’s story group, is among a team of execs working to define the “legitimate” Star Wars canon in the wake of the Disney sale as the company looks to ramp up new sequels and series across a constellation of media.

By the looks of it, Disney/Lucasfilm has established a committee to keep track of and define the “canon,” and they’ll be making an effort to unify all the new stuff (from movies, comics, spinoffs, etc.) once it gets off the ground. It's an ambitious move, and definitely a good idea for a franchise with so many threads.

As for old stuff like those Dark Horse comics, decades of tie-in novels and occasional videogames? That’s where it gets tricky. Chee didn’t offer any hints as to what they’ll be doing, but it’ll be interesting to see how Disney walks the fine line of pleasing longtime fans while not getting bogged down in a mountain of different levels of “canon.”

If nothing else, it’s great to see that Lucasfilm is working so hard to keep it all straight. Disney has done an insanely good job of keeping the Marvel Cinematic Universe unified, and it looks like they’ll be spreading that approach into a galaxy far, far away.

Most likely scenario? They scrap most everything outside the main films, including the Expanded Universe stuff, since most general fans are aware only of the trilogies. It’d be far too messy to try and incorporate the other material at this point, and the general moviegoing public isn’t terribly aware of it to begin with. But here’s hoping they’ll at least draw some inspiration from what’s come before.

What do you think? What should be the legit Star Wars canon?
