Fans got some pretty exciting (and quite fiery) news during this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con when it was officially announced the Spirit of Vengeance was coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Season 4 premieres in the fall.

However, some were left scratching their heads that it wasn’t Johnny Blaze joining the team but the Marvel NOW! rebooted version of the character, Robbie Reyes. Fun fact: There have been quite a few versions of Ghost Rider in the history of Marvel Comics besides Johnny Blaze.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will see Matador actor Gabriel Luna (ahem) blaze his way into the lives of Director Agent Coulson and the rest of the team in the role of young mechanic Robbie Reyes, who -- instead of riding the classic motorcycle associated with the hellbound character -- drives a muscle car (the car was even shown at SDCC) and his inhabited by the spirit of a serial killer.

But why chose Robbie Reyes over Johnny Blaze? Here’s what Marvel Head of TV Jeph Loeb told

“It’s incredibly exciting, and I know a lot of people were speculating on it. Not only is it exciting to be able to tell people that it's Robbie Reyes, but that we have this unbelievably cool car, that 1969 black Charger that’s still on the floor of the convention, and then on top of that that we’ve just announced that Gabriel Luna, who is an extremely talented young actor who people may know from Matador on El Rey. It’s going to be a hell of a season. We picked Robbie, actually, because our show, at the end of day, is always about family, and the fact that Robbie’s relationship with Gabe [Robbie’s developmentally disabled brother] is so much a part of his character, and the world of east LA, which is not a place that we’ve ever gone to in the Marvel universe, was just a really exciting way.”

There you have it. What do you guys think? Are you looking forward to seeing the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider come to life on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Season 4 premieres on Sept. 20 on ABC?
