The upcoming sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets proved a surprise hit at Hall H earlier this week at San Diego Comic-Con, so we caught up with the star and director to see what all the fuss is about.

Director and writer Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) and star Dane Dehaan (Chronicle) chatted about the sheer scope of the film, which is set in the 28th century and follows operatives takes with keeping order throughout the universe. Besson has already proven he can create a compelling future world with The Fifth Element, and judging by what they have to say about Valerian, it sounds like his latest flick could blow it out of the water (at least in sheer FX power).

The film is a risky, ambitious swing at wild sci-fi, but the footage shown off at SDCC this year certainly wowed the crowd. Here’s hoping it proves a return to form for Besson.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens July 21, 2017.
