The second and final batch of character posters for the upcoming second season of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful has been unveiled, and this time we have a look at some of the villains (and rather ambiguous heroes) of the series.

The first batch delivered some great character portraits for Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), Sir Ian Murray (Timothy Dalton), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Sembene (Danny Sapani). But a few of the gang were MIA, namely Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway). No more!

Now we have the good, pale doctor and his Creature (Rory Kinnear). There's also this season’s new villain, Evelyn Poole, aka the spiritualist and medium Madame Kali (Helen McCrory), who hosted that hair-raising seance last season, and her powerful daughter, Hecate (Sarah Greene). Fathers and sons. Mothers and daughters. Yep. Pattern.

The new season will see Vanessa and Ethan form a deeper bond while the whole gang has a battle to wage against the evil forces threatening to destroy them. Series creator John Logan said: “This season Vanessa and Ethan face new challenges and old enemies, and turn to each other for solace. Their intimacy grows as they are forced to confront their demons together.”

As for our resident and perennially young bad boy Dorian Gray, the Creature and Brona (Billie Piper, who's apparently not getting her character poster this year -- they probably want to keep the way she'll look under wraps), they, too, will also have some battles of their own to face.

Showtime president David Nevins said about Madame Kali being this season’s Big Bad: “There’s a great antagonist next year played by Helen McCrory ... Season 1’s antagonist was sort of an inhuman character. It’ll be good to have a more human antagonist.”

Have a look at the new character posters below, and let us know what you think. The second season of Penny Dreadful will return for a 10-episode run on May 3.
