Director Adam Wingard and Lionsgate have been quietly prepping the mysterious horror film The Woods for a while now — but it turns out there’s a whole lot more to this project than meets the eye.
The studio has announced that The Woods is actually a straight-up sequel to the horror smash The Blair Witch Project, and it also got a fitting new title: Blair Witch. In case you’re wondering, yes, it keeps the found footage style you know and love/possibly hate, which the original film essentially pioneered back in 1999. As for Blair Witch, it looks like found footage with a bigger budget. Which, hey, maybe it’s time for a throwback? If anyone can pull it off, maybe its Wingard (V/H/S).
The story looks to pick up the pieces from the first film, as a group of college students head into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to piece together the mystery of a family member’s disappearance. But once they get out there, they find a whole lot more than they’d bargained for. Cue all the classic scares from the original, plus a few new twists. Yep, there’s even somebody standing in the corner (which, all these years later, is still kinda freaky).
Blair Witch opens September 23.
