How do you make a Groot comic? First look at Marvel’s new Guardians spinoff

Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy became a surprise box-office smash, the far-out team of B-listers have become a hot commodity in Marvel’s comic empire. It’s gone so far that they’re giving the tree his own series.

Ahead of the new Groot comic’s debut on June 3, Marvel has released some preview pages from the series to give us a taste of how they’ll build a cohesive story around a character who can only say three words. The trick? He takes Rocket Raccoon, who does a lot of the expository heavy lifting, along for the ride (at least in the early pages).

But don’t expect Rocket to stick around too long. The series, written by Jeff Loveness (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) with art by Disney alum Brian Kesinger, will find the duo separated while on an intergalactic road trip. After losing his way, Groot will have run-ins with everything from space sharks to new aliens.

Honestly, we’re psyched to see Groot get his own series. Rocket has already had his day in the sun with a spinoff comic, and Marvel is mining just about every other member of the team — so why not Groot? Rocket’s series has proven how much fun these guys can have when away from Peter Quill and the gang, and we’re psyched to see more of those adventures (with a Groot-centric slant, of course).
