The folks at DC are ramping up more movie projects than ever these days, but there’s one major hero who will almost certainly stay on the sideline — and it turns out we have Man of Steel to blame.
There have been rumblings of a Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) film for years now, though nothing has ever actually come of the project. Director Peter Segal opened up to Coming Soon about why the film never happened, and explained that DC’s big-screen resurgence has actually hurt the odds for Shazam.
Why? Because the character has similar powers to Superman, and Segal said there’s no obvious way for the studio to actually put a movie together that could fit in with the new Man of Steel-verse. So, as long as Superman is doing well, it means we’ll almost certainly never get a Shazam movie. Boo.
Here’s an excerpt from the interview:
“The thing is, Shazam has always lived this tortured life going against Superman. This dates back to the 1930s. Because Captain Marvel had similar powers to Superman, the DC folks back then sued what was the most popular comic book on the stands at that time. Years later, they bought it and it became a DC property but, as long as Superman stays hot in the market place, there seems like a little bit of a crossover between the two characters.
After Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, it seemed like there was a moment in time where Shazam was going to see the light of day. That's when you heard those stories. Now that Superman is being invigorated and going up against Batman, I think it's difficult for DC to figure out how to launch this character in the wake of Superman's resurgence.”
It makes sense that it’d be tough to launch two franchises around characters with similar abilities, but you wouldn’t think it's impossible. The characters still have differences, and you could almost certainly differentiate things, looking at everything from origin to enemies.
What do you think? Would you prefer Superman over Shazam?
