We talked to Carrie Fisher about Star Wars. Let's just let that sink in for a moment. WE TALKED TO PRINCESS LEIA ABOUT STAR WARS!
Carrie Fisher's been going around the country doing a one-woman show based on her memoir Wishful Drinking, and now HBO is putting it on the air. Part of the show has Fisher riffing about her Star Wars experience, including the Pez dispenser in her likeness. She told us one story that only happened behind the scenes, when George Lucas himself came to visit.
"He's seen the show a couple times, and he actually came over and explained, because [I told the story] of him saying that there was no underwear in space," Fisher said at the Television Critics Association fall press tour. "He explained that in space you get weightless, and so your flesh expands. What? But your bra doesn't, so you get strangled by your bra. That's why I couldn't wear a bra in the first Star Wars. George actually came backstage when I did the show in San Francisco and told me that."
As if that clarified everything after all these years. Fisher responded sarcastically, "Really? Now I understand it."
Part of Fisher's material developed out of her many years speaking publicly about Lucas. Various award shows called upon her to introduce her Star Wars colleagues, so she honed some good material that way.
"Some of the show came from roasting George Lucas," said Fisher. "I mean, I gave awards to everybody for many, many years. That is what my job was. You're honoring George, I'm here. You're honoring Harrison, I'm here. So some of the show came out of those honorings."
Fisher even puts on a wig of the Leia buns in her act. Revisiting that hairdo made her feel, she said, "Like an a--hole. Complete, undignified jerk. But other than that, really good."
For more Star Wars stories, Wishful Drinking airs this December on HBO.
