When Hunger Games director Gary Ross jumped ship on the sequel, Catching Fire, it set off a feeding frenzy over who would replace him in the newly minted blockbuster franchise. Well, we finally have a winner.
Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine), who was one of two finalists along with Bennett Miller (Moneyball, Capote), has officially been offered the gig to direct Catching Fire.
According to Deadline, Miller was extremely interested in the gig but couldn't make the fast-paced schedule fit with his workload.
It seems like a solid pick, as Lawrence brings the sci-fi chops from his work on I Am Legend and Constantine. But the warp-speed schedule—which scared away original director Ross—still has us a bit worried.
Here's hoping Lawrence is able to crank out a good movie promptly, because after the bonanza that was The Hunger Games, Catching Fire will already be climbing a mountain of expectations.
What do you think? Is Lawrence the man for the job?
