Joss Whedon’s Firefly is one of the most beloved projects in science fiction, but the short-lived genre series is still inspiring its fandom more than a decade later.

The husband-wife musical duo The Fallen Stars (aka Bobbo and Tracy Byrnes) are putting together an Americana rock song based on each episode of the show’s first (and only) season. Fittingly enough, the project has been titled "Leaves on the Wind." HitFix caught up with the musicians to get an update on the project, plus some intel on how it came together.

Tracy said they start by sitting down and watching each episode together, armed with “a pencil and paper, and usually … a guitar.” They were inspired by, not surprisingly, the awesomeness of the series itself. As for the lyrics, the couple made an effort to combine dialogue from the episodes with original lyrics written by themselves. Which actually works quite well, because (like most of Whedon’s shows) most of the dialogue is catchy and beautiful — and a natural fit for the translation.

The deeper you get into the songs, the more references you’ll find to the inside-baseball stuff of the series and the characters themselves. It’s ambitiously geeky in the best possible way.
