Next month, Marvel Comics will launch its next major event with Secret Empire, a massive story from writer Nick Spencer (Captain America: Steve Rogers) and artist Steve McNiven (Civil War). It will see an entire universe of heroes teaming up to stop Captain America, who was brainwashed and turned into a Hydra agent secretly manipulating a world of heroes behind the scenes. Now, the Red Skull's plan to turn his greatest enemy into his most dangerous ally has come to fruition, and it'll take more than one superhero team to stop it.

Publicity for the series has been brewing for months, and anticipation for it has gone hand-in-hand with reader anxiety over the seemingly endless onslaught of event books and concern over the "Captain America Is Basically a Nazi" plot playing out in the current political climate. Now we finally get to look at the work itself, and see what Spencer and McNiven have planned.

As you'll see in the preview pages (we got six, complete with letters), the event proper wastes no time in picking up the action, leaving the prelude issues to set the stage for the actual fight. In these pages, Captain America is already threatening villains with his Hydra allegiance, and Hydra soldiers are everywhere. Meanwhile the Champions -- including Amadeus Cho, Miles Morales and Viv Vision -- are running an Underground movement in Vegas, taking on the enemy through back channels. It's a nice start.

Check out the preview below, and let us know what you think. Secret Empire #1 arrives May 3.
