Broadway adaptations aren’t done with Hollywood yet. After Les Misérables and the surprise hit (and intensely musical) The Greatest Showman, Cats is bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular felines to the big screen next year — and now they’ve got their villain. Maybe you didn’t know Cats had a villain. But after hearing who it is, it’ll be more than worth checking out.
The riff on Sherlock’s Moriarty, aka “The Napoleon of Crime,” is at odds with the Jellicles (the cat gang that the central cats run with — listen, we’re not sure what’s going on with Cats either), kidnapping their leader Old Deuteronomy at one point. He also makes a move on taking Demeter, who has a song about him with Bombalurina called “Macavity: The Mystery Cat.”
These other cats could be those played by a cast already including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Laurie Davidson, and Mette Towley. It’s an incredible group of actors and singers for a very crazy story about a bunch of cats.
It’ll especially be a departure for Elba, who, despite having plenty of stage experience, is currently working on the thing furthest from Cats: the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. Why aren’t The Rock and Jason Statham playing cats?
Maybe they’ll make surprise cameos when Cats hits the big screen on Dec. 20 of next year.
