The global phenomenon known as Magic: The Gathering has been a spellbinding force in pop culture since the first decks of collector trading cards were released back in 1993, unleashing a monstrous franchise that has sold over 20 billion Magic cards.
For the sorcery-centered property's 25th anniversary, Wizards of the Coast and IDW Publishing are teaming up for a new fantasy comic book series set in the addictive game's vast universe, and SYFY WIRE is proud to debut a scintillating set of exclusive pages.
Written by Vita Ayala (Supergirl, The Wilds) and paired with interior art by Harvey Tolibao (X-Men, Green Arrow), Magic: The Gathering: Chandra promises a treasure of bold adventures starring fan-favorite pyromancer Planeswalker Chandra Nalaar.
"With Magic: The Gathering - Chandra, we wanted to show off the world of MTG as much as the characters," Ayala told SYFY WIRE. "The idea of Planes is one that anyone familiar with genre fiction will get hip to pretty quickly, but we also wanted to be sure to make the book fun and accessible for people who were completely new to not only the game, but some of the more insider knowledge that comes with fantasy and sci-fi. There is a huge and rich multi-verse (many, many parallel universes) to play with here, and we wanted to show off a bunch to get people excited."
"Think of a character that you love. From any story, from any property. There is an excellent chance that you were introduced to that character by some kind of page, or some sort of screen," said Jeremy Jarvis, Magic: The Gathering franchise director, in a press release. "We are thrilled to have Vita and Harvey introduce you to Chandra, to her story, her quirks, and her incredible powers. Set in the near future of the Multiverse, these never-before-told stories will breathe life into Chandra, her cohorts, and her enemies in new and visually striking ways. Knowledge of cards is optional, love of characters required."
The reader-friendly project offers a fresh start to newbies into the famous fantasy world and follows the powerful pyromancer in the wake of a tragic loss. Chandra strikes out into uncharted territory, destined to prove to her family and herself that her next encounter with hostile forces will have a different outcome. Faced with challenging threats, this imaginative series explores her evolving fate and questions whether she'll overcome her grief in time to triumph over a familiar shadowy adversary. "Whether you’ve been playing Magic: The Gathering for 25 years (Happy 25th!), or you just wandered into a comic shop and dug the cover, there is plenty in the page to set your imagination ablaze!" says Ayala.
