Voyage to the Stars: The hit podcast's interstellar hijinks come alive in IDW's wacky miniseries

Avid listeners to the hit sci-fi comedy podcast Voyage to the Stars will be tickled pink to learn that a new comic book release from IDW Publishing based on the property is hurtling toward their local comic shop starting with the premiere issue on Aug. 19.

The improvised podcast starring Colton Dunn (Superstore), Felicia Day (Supernatural), Janet Varney (Legend of Korra), Kirsten Vangsness (Criminal Minds), and Steve Berg (Drunk History) is colliding with comics in a wild miniseries romp written by five-time Harvey Award nominee James Asmus (Inhumans, Quantum & Woody, Ant-Man and the Wasp) and injected with art courtesy of Connie Diadone — and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive preview.

In the comic, Voyage to the Stars' intrepid and underqualified crew has somehow managed to survive Earth’s obliteration, and now they’re determined (and ambiguously destined) to thwart a consuming ancient evil from devouring the whole universe. But stopping this frightening threat could be tricky business, due to our bumbling heroes constantly destroying nearly every planet and alien species they encounter.

Voyage 1

Voyage to the Stars was a certified phenomenon when it first struck cyberspace in 2019 with its misfit band of 23rd-century space explorers stuck on the wrong side of a wormhole. With 2.5 million downloads in its inaugural year and over 100,000 viewers on Twitch, the irreverent sci-fi podcast has consistently ranked in the Top 100 for comedy. This entertaining comic book adaptation is a witty, sacastic romp around the cosmos that's a supremely satisfying cocktail blended with barbed essences of Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Spaceballs.

"Whenever you bring something like a novel or now a podcast to visual life, the art team has to make choices that might not match what fans had imagined for themselves," Asmus tells SYFY WIRE. "But as a fan of Voyage, I was delighted by the ways Connie Daidone and Reggie Graham brought the series to life. They capture all the expression, energy, and humor — but add so much more pop and colorful excitement into every page!"

Voyage Slice 2

"Connie immediately captured every bit of the humor, energy, and character nuance packed into our tale (and inspired, of course, by the wonderfully screwed-up characters and performances from the show). So while this version of Voyage may not have the all-star voice cast, Connie delivered such pitch-perfect character performances that I could hear the cast perfectly on every page," Asmus says.

"Reggie Graham's colors give this book such a delicious candy coating — it's a perfect balance for the characters' salty and sour personalities," he adds. "And brings a gorgeous and fun energy to even the crew's biggest disasters!"
