ILMxLAB announces its latest reality-bending Star Wars endeavor: Project Porg

Star Wars has been fertile ground for video games since the Atari days, and now they've been taking their newest endeavors into virtual reality. After announcing their new VR series, Vader Immortal, last month, ILMxLAB is tackling a slightly more cuddly character for its new mixed reality project. Well, characters.

Okay, it's porgs, those beakless little birds with the deep, soulful eyes that resided on Ahch-To with Luke Skywalker during his exile.

Project Porg will have a special sneak peek at Magic Leap's L.E.A.P. Conference this week, but ILMxLAB promises a game where "you will need to gain the trust and affection of your porgs by offering them treats and playing with them. Teach them how to maneuver real-world environments with care instructions from Star Wars’ most meticulous droid, C-3PO."

After being introduced in 2017's The Last Jedi, the porgs have infested their way into becoming among the most memorable and beloved critters in Star Wars lore. Now you can spend your spare time winning over a digital flock (murder?).

It's certainly a bold step for Star Wars games, which typically put you in the cockpit of a starfighter or have you wielding a lightsaber (or, at the very least, a blaster). But, as gaming technology continues to evolve, it'll be interesting to see what ILMxLAB will come up with so fans can immerse themselves in a virtually rendered galaxy far, far away.

More details will be announced Wednesday morning at the L.E.A.P. developer's conference, so here's hoping for a definitive release date as well as some footage of the gameplay.

Are you excited at the chance to become the caretaker of some digital porgs? Let us know in the comments.
