One of the coolest things about Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy was his unique spin on the Batmobile. Well, here’s the clay lump that started it all.

A picture of Nolan’s original clay model for the Batmobile Tumbler has surfaced via Reddit, showing off the basic concept of the military-esque armored vehicle we know and love. The design was apparently born from this crude model, then refined by concept artists and engineers.

Nolan’s goal with the Tumbler was always to make something as realistic and practical as possible, essentially building the urban tank a vigilante would need to clean up the streets of a real-life Gotham. The real Tumbler built for the film weighed 2.5 tons and could go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. It topped out at 110 miles per hour.
