Yesterday, it was revealed that Mehcad Brooks' James Olsen would be taking up the mantle of DC Comics vigilante The Guardian on Supergirl, and that Winn (Jeremy Jordan) would be moonlighting as his sidekick.

Now, The CW has released our first official look at James Olsen in full-on Guardian gear, complete with helmet and indestructible shield. And boy oh boy does he look different from his comic book incarnation. Gone are the golden shield and helmet. Instead, Superman’s former sidekick is mostly clad in grayish-white, with a massive helmet covering his entire head and a small slit for his eyes. At least the shield is somewhat similar to The Manhattan Guardian version of the character.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said about James’ decision that being a photographer is no longer enough for him:

“James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to decide to become a vigilante and he’s going to become Guardian — complete with the shield — which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara [Melissa Benoist], because he has decided not to tell her. Now there’s this new masked vigilante, and she has her own feelings about vigilantes, and it becomes a push and pull about who gets to decide who gets to be a hero?”
