Image of the day: Unmake history in first poster for Syfy's 12 Monkeys

We’re a little over a month away from the debut of Syfy’s ambitious time-travel drama 12 Monkeys, and the network has revealed the first tantalizing poster for the new series.

The series is loosely based on Terry Gilliam’s acclaimed 1995 film, and the network (which, full disclosure, is the corporate parent of Blastr) is billing it as part of an ongoing push into hard sci-fi — something the network has shied away from over the past several years.

The poster is evocative of the imagery we’ve come to expect from the footage released so far, and includes the tantalizing tag line “Unmake History.” The plot follows a man from the future sent back to the present in an effort to avert a catastrophe that almost wipes out humanity. The series looks twisty, and we’re interested to see how they play the concept over the long haul of a full season.

But, to make it work, executive producer Natalie Chaidez told Entertainment Weekly they’ve made some changes to the concept and rules to time travel to tell a story all its own:

“We were all very, very big fans of the original film and had a deep love and respect for that material, so we didn’t want to just redo what the movie does. So, while the series shares a lot of the same overall themes of the movie, it is in fact a reimagining and we changed the rules.”

While we patiently wait for the Friday, Jan. 16, premiere, check out the debut poster below and let us know what you think:
