One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first directors has jumped on board a long-in-development new sci-fi movie.

The director is Louis Leterrier, who was behind the camera for 2008's The Incredible Hulk, and the movie is Monster Hunt. The Wrap broke the news about Leterrier's hiring, describing the Lionsgate production as a "rural Men in Black action-comedy centered on two brothers."

The film has reportedly been in development since 2013, and even though it has landed a director, there's not actually a script yet. The studio is on its own hunt for a couple of writers to handle that.

What's not exactly clear is whether this is connected at all to a 2015 Chinese film with the same name that went on to become -- at the time -- the highest grossing Chinese production ever, earning that country's equivalent of $385 million at the box office (it has since been surpassed by Wolf Warrior 2 and The Mermaid).

That Monster Hunt was also marketed as an action-comedy, although it was more fantasy-oriented and took place in a distant past when humans and monsters co-existed. Inquiries to Lionsgate about the possible tie-in were inconclusive as this story went to press, although the company did at one point pick up distribution rights for China's Monster Hunt 2, according to Variety

As for Leterrier, he's well-known for directing the Clash of the Titans remake, the first two Transporter movies, as well as the magician heist thriller Now You See Me. At one point, he was attached to a film version of Joe Hill's apocalyptic novel The Fireman. Of course, he was also the second director after Jon Favreau to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk.

That movie remains kind of the forgotten child of the MCU, and neither Leterrier nor Norton returned to the franchise, with Marvel recasting the role with Mark Ruffalo and not pursuing a second standalone Hulk adventure.

We'll let you know more about Monster Hunt as intel comes in.
