We’re less than a week away from the return of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the network has already dropped the first five minutes to get us pumped. Not surprisingly, Inhumans are changing the MCU in a very big way.
The opening scene is essentially a cold open, focused on a a new Inhuman named Joey (Juan Pablo Raba), who is struggling with his newly activated ability to melt any metal he touches. It doesn’t take long for him to attract the attention of the authorities — but it turns out S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t the first group on the scene. A tactical squad from the mysterious Alien Threat Containment Unit attempts to apprehend Joey, until they get blasted out of frame by a familiar force blast.
We then pick up with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Daisy (Chloe Bennett), Mack (Henry Simmons) and Hunter (Nick Blood) as they rescue Joey and ship him off to the 2.0 version of The Bus, which looks more like the love child of a stealth bomber and a helicarrier at this point. Coulson (Clark Gregg) also shows up in incognito mode, snagging a sneak peek at Alien Threat Containment Unit chief Rosalind Price (Constance Zimmer).

Compared to previous seasons, this seems like an excellent way to kickstart year three. There’s obviously been a few months (or more) that have passed since last season, and we’re picking up with a newly focused S.H.I.E.L.D. tasked with handling the Inhuman situation, all while duking it out with a powerful new government agency trying to replace them. Oh, and he didn’t show up here, but don’t forget Ward (Brett Dalton) is also leading the remnants of HYDRA out there.
It looks like Season 3 might actually pay off on all the potential that’s been building the past two years. What do you think?
The third season of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres Sept. 29 on ABC.
